Why Fit Testing Matters
Under OSHA Respiratory Protection Standard 29 CFR 1910.134, employers are required to:
- Conduct initial fit testing before an employee uses a respirator (a medical exam is required prior to fit test)
- Perform annual fit testing thereafter
- Ensure proper fit whenever a different respirator facepiece is used
- Re-test employees if there are physical changes (e.g., weight change, facial structure, dental work) that could affect the fit

What Your Employees Should Know
To ensure accurate results, employees must:
- Be clean-shaven where the respirator seals to the face
- Avoid eating, drinking (except water), or smoking 30 minutes prior to test
- Bring their assigned respirator(s). To ensure we have the fit test adapter, please let us know the type of respirator(s) that needs to be tested.
